Washington (D.C.) Ballou defensive tackle Marvin Austin has made his highly-anticipated announcement, choosing North Carolina over Florida State on National Signing Day.
Washington (D.C.) defensive tackle Marvin Austin signed with North Carolina on Wednesday.
Austin is the No. 1 ranked defensive tackle in the nation, and the No. 7 overall player in the Rivals.com Class of 2007 national rankings.
He was named a high school All-American, and earned a nomination to the U.S. Army All-American Game.
"I took football out of the equation, and made the best decision for me," Austin said immediately following his announcement.
Shortly after Austin's letter of intent was announced, UNC head coach Butch Davis discussed his newest defensive lineman.
"I think one of the things that Marvin is going to bring, the play-making ability is obvious. He is a passionate football player; he's explosive, he's disruptive," said Davis.
"The other part is that this guy is charismatic. This guy is a leader. He will raise the expectations of the football team. It took a lot of hard work for a lot of people at the University of North Carolina to make this happen."
Davis is excited to work with Austin because of his current skill set, and his desire to continue getting better each and every day.
"As talented and physically gifted as he is, he wants to get better; he wants to grow. Certainly with my background as a defensive line coach at the University of Miami, and John Blake's experience at Oklahoma and Nebraska, I think Marvin saw that between the two of us, we offered him an opportunity to really grow. He's going to be physically well-prepared to be the best defensive lineman in the country," said Davis.
According to sources, Austin has been working for the last week recruiting for North Carolina; among the people he called included [db]Greg Little[/db] and [db]Weslye Saunders[/db].
